The Great Escape : Before Amsterdam

The Great Amsterdam, a large 12th century fishing village who expanded to becoming one of the biggest trading ports of the world in the 17th century. Traveled and waged wars with Portugal not just regular warfare but decided to take a peak into the discovery and trade positions in the eastern world with Japan. from this a boat network within the city emerged in the form of canals running through it(Don't fact check me I got no clue). Beyond that Amsterdam is known for it's night life and fantastic nature and architecture in and around the city. Everything from Clubs filled with loud music and partying people to the large rustic looking windmills on the outskirts of the city. Amsterdam got everything a traveler might want to see and do, and here I'm going to give you some tips and tricks on things you might enjoy doing while traveling in Amsterdam. So without further ado, This is my Pre-Amsterdam thoughts!

"De 9 Straatjes"

"De 9 Straatjes" or "The 9 Streets" are a set of different streets (Hence the name) but it's not just any set of streets rather it's a large network containing, small cozy bookstores, Anne Franke's house, The Iconic canals of Amsterdam nad mych much more! You'll get to experience buildings that seem to be from an old Disney movie and museums that will teach you things you didn't even imagine! Take the chance! I truly believe it's a steal!

"Hortus Botanicus"

"Hortus Botanicus" Latin for "Botanical garden" is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world (!!!) which date back to the 1680's when it was used as a small medicinal garden by the Dutch colonies which used it as a dispository for newly discovered plant species brought back during the Golden Age. The building might be old but it was renovated in 1912 where a glassdome was fitted to help add to it's greenhouse effect. Speaking of old, there are plants here that's over 2000 years old! The 2000 year old cactus is older then the building itself!

"Unmissable Museum"

The "Unmissable Museum" is a museum build in the house where Anne Franke and her family hid from the German police between 1942 and 1944 in the annexe of this house. This is the house where the famous Anne Franke's diary was written, in it Anne Franke discribed how it was living like they did hidden from the Nazi's in fear of execution. A museum established in memory of a time that should never be forgotten. I personally think it's incredibly important that we put places like this into light.

"Rijksmuseum"

The "Rijksmuseum" is an art and history museum situated in Amsterdam is a Museum filled with over 8000' pieces which tells a 800 year old story of Dutch history from the Middle ages to Mondrian era through 80 different galleries. A newly renovated wing, the Phillips wing offers a temporary exhibition space, a photogallery and a restaurant. When visiting this make sure to not leave without checking out the Asian Pavillion which houses a collection of Asian art.

"The Jordaan"

Now this is my type of place. Probably the place that most people come to think about when they think Amsterdam without knowing the name of it. The Jordaan is a neighborhood charming unlike anything with it's narrow alleys, quirky shops, 17th-century buildings and leafy canals running straight through it. This holds as a special place in my heart with the canals, ever since I was a child I've wanted to see this place with my own eyes and now I will finally get to!

"The Van-Gogh Museum"

Amsterdam is the city where the famous painter Van-Gogh's museum is located. The Van-Gogh Museum will set you on a tour with some of the most famous paintings ever painted. This museum happen to be the worlds largest collection of pieces by van Gogh which happened to come from just The Netherlands. "Sunflowers", "The Potato Eaters", "Almond Blossom" and "The Bedroom" are just some of the fantastic features this museum offers. A must see in my opinion!

"The Windmills of Amsterdam"

The Windmills of Amsterdam is a collective of windmills scattered around the Amsterdam area which you can visit. Windmills such as the Sloten Windmills or Keukenhof. These are Windmills situated around the world famous Tulipfields which if you're visiting during blooming season is a must see! It's almost surreal to see all that color scattered around everywhere, with the old windmills in the back of the fields. most of these windmills are placed next to rivers too which just adds to the beauty of it all!

"The Red Light District"

Amsterdam is not only a city for beautiful 17th-century buildings and amazing museums, it's also a party city filled with nightlife activities! There is nighclubs, pubs and bars scattered all around the city. Most famously in the middle of the city the Red Light District is situated. Now Red light has gotten a reputation of being filled with Brothels but it's not all it's for. There's multiple nightclubs, Coffeshops (During the day) and the Old Keuk (Old Church). This is the main center of nightlife!
